Resource for Parents of Kids with Food Allergies

Here's a link to a site called AllergicChild  that seems to cover all of the basics regarding life with a child with food allergies. This site is run by the parents of a boy with multiple, severe food allergies. I spent lots of time reading their story, which is not so different from mine!

Holiday Candy for Everyone!

I just discovered a most excellent online candy store that has allergen-free candy. The store is called Indie Candy, and I haven't ordered from them, yet, but they seem to have some items free of all big 8 allergens! This could be a lifesaver for holidays. It's too late to order for Halloween, but I bet they'll have some good-looking stuff for Christmas!!

Another company I like

Edward & Sons Trading Company, Inc is a company that owns many gluten-free, vegan and organic brands that I highly recommend. I love their Brown Rice Snaps, the Roads-End dairy and gluten free mac 'n' chreese, the Native Forest canned fruits and the Let's Do... gluten-free ice cream cones and the chocolate sprinkles and the organic gummy bears and the coconut flakes and I could go on, and on, and on!

Boo, hiss to you, NPR Deniers!

Usually, I love NPR. This time, however, I don't. They've run a bit that I'm afraid has set back the good fight for food allergy awareness a million years. I hope that none of the folks associated with this article ever need to carry an EPI-pen for someone they love.

Allergy-friendly restaurants?

I ran across a new Web site today called AllergyEats. It allows you to rate restaurants based on their “allergy-friendliness”. It is just starting out, and needs YOU to rate restaurants to help make it a success!

Simple foods from an excellent chef

Mark Bittman is becoming my favorite chef. While he hasn’t written any cookbooks specifically for the food-allergy crowd, lots of the recipes in his cookbooks are already free of many allergens. He just doesn’t put dairy, egg, nuts or wheat in everything he makes. We own his Best Recipes in the World and will probably purchase his newest, The Food Matters Cookbook. We love Best Recipes in the World because he includes so many recipes from cultures that (unlike ours) don’t use dairy, wheat or eggs as common ingredients!

Boo! Another Halloween success

Well, we took the kids out trick-or-treating last night. As usual, when we got home we traded them allergy-safe candy for the junk they had collected from the neighbors. One neighbor in particular continued the excellent tradition of giving each of my kids a bag of non-food goodies! How do you handle trick-or-treat with your kids who have food allergies?
